Receiving the Medal of Honor - 588 Words
The Medal of Honor is the nationââ¬â¢s highest medal for valor in combat that can be awarded to members of the armed forces (The United States Army Medal of Honor). But what are the criteria for the Medal of Honor? According to the United States Navy it is a person who: distinguishes himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of dutyââ¬â(1) while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; (2) while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or (3) while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party (The United States Navy Medal of Honor). Letââ¬â¢s say, hypothetically, I am on a committee and I have to decide whether a brave soldier deserves a Medal of Honor for actions of extraordinary valor in combat. The soldiers brave action was jumping on what he t hought was a grenade while under heavy fire. However, what was thought to be a grenade was actually a cleverly carved mango. With that being said, should this soldier receive the Medal of Honor, or was this a classic case of moral luck, therefore, he should not be honored with the Medal? Labor Relations Southwests Current Issues - 1425 Words
Current Issues Despite Southwestââ¬â¢s long standing reputation as an employer who makes their employees and customers happy, there have been storms brewing in the companyââ¬â¢s labor relations and customer relations sector. As was mentioned before, Southwest recently acquired AirTran Airways and revealed plans to take its already successful domestic business international with flights to Mexico and the Caribbean (Martin, 2014). This organizational restructuring is causing Southwest to have what Time Magazineââ¬â¢s Brad Tuttle calls an ââ¬Å"identity crisisâ⬠for the airline whose new advertisements have removed the humor they are famous for and the messages of ââ¬Å"bags fly freeâ⬠from commercials. Bob Jordan, a Southwest executive, explained the change as aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Another reason the airlinesââ¬â¢ employees disagree about adding seasonal workers is because Southwest is also in another contract negotiation that may mean freezing pay scales to prevent company lay-offs. It seems unfair to add more employees who will also be looking for a piece of the monetary pie. These labor relations issues are new to Southwest, and for the first time the companyââ¬â¢s problems, and not their great customer service, are putting them in the spotlight. To overcome this, the company will need to tread gently and find ways to successfully negotiate with their unions (Maher, 2014). Potential ways to manage and influence relationships to benefit all The success of Southwest Airline and their substantial growth are unquestionable, despite some of their recent setbacks, and they are even used as an example in American business colleges as one of the best organizations to work for. They have been often praised for their culture of going the extra mile for their employees and customers; and consequently they have a series of unions which historically they have had good relations with. Performing and Visual Arts Persuasive Essay Example For Students
Performing and Visual Arts Persuasive Essay It has been said that for centuries the many have debated without resolution of defining the word art (Spore, 2011). The definition of performing and visual art can be described as a creative form of communication through several different outlets. These may include plays, music, paintings, sculptures, dance and so much more. My personal experience with art has been such a positive influence in my life. Art has always been my escape. When was a teenager was going through some hard family times. On my lunch break at school Loud go into the music room and teach myself how to play the piano. Typically I get frustrated very easily when do not know how to do something and I do not pick up on it right away. My fingers were not limber enough for IANA, knew how to read music but had no idea where these notes were located on the piano, I was clueless. For some reason sitting at that piano calmed me, I never once got frustrated. To this day music is still an outlet for me. More often then that includes dancing to go with it. Eve to dance for fun, dance away my stress. Adore watching true dancers perform more than anything. Often watch the Television show You Think You Can Dance on Fox. There has been so many times that the performance has made me cry. There are several things that go into this amazing performance making me cry. The choreographer turn heir story into a vision of dance in their head and pair it with the perfect song. A choreographer can have a great dance but without t he perfect dancers then it will never come across right. The dancer has to have the raw emotion come through their performance as well. The wardrobe also helps create this character the dancer is trying to portrait. When all of these elements are paired together just right it creates a truly magical experience for me. Think humans cannot help ourselves in creating art. We are a very creative, intelligent and emotional species, I think that art is our way of expressing ourselves, telling our stories and caching out to others. Art creates a common ground tort people that they may not otherwise have. One of the first things infants do is coo at themselves almost in song. When an infant gets to a point where they can stand or walk first instinct is to bounce when they hear music. To be without art would to be without emotion and passion. It seems that it is almost encoded into our DNA to have creativity and artistic abilities, even if it is in just the mildest form References D. J. Spore, Perceiving the Arts: An Introduction to the Humanities. (up. 1-235). Upper Saddle River Prentice Hall.

The Grapes Of Wrath Essays (892 words) - U.S. Route 66, Dust Bowl
The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck's novel, The Grapes of Wrath has left much specifically untold about the authors true intentions on this book. His epic chronicle has been described as being "Written with passionate conviction" (Dorothy Parker). This passionate conviction has led John Steinbeck into mastering bold dramatization. His skills at the art of dramatization in literature was not solely used in The Grapes of Wrath, but also used in another of his twisted and possibly controversial works called Of Mice and Men. One of John Steinbeck's main and possibly most obvious themes, is the hostility and frequent hatred between the migrant workers and the already socially and financially established Californians. There are many examples in the book that show not only that Steinbeck thought that it was an issue to be concerned with, but also it showed his thoughts and feelings towards the subject. Three examples of this theme are shown during encounters with other people that have already been there, in the corollary chap Along the way to California the Joad's encountered other people that had already been to California and were now returning. These people, like the ragged man with the sunburned face from the road-side camp described on page 242. He had had children that died because wages were too low and work was too scarce to afford food for his children and wife. His story was one of pain and despair, also his story showed the cruelty and inhumane treatment which the California land owners displayed towards the migrant workers. This grim story of the broken man didn't discourage the Joad's from parting from the set course. Later on inside the Californian border the Joads stop by a river. Tom and his Father find a spot to go swimming where they are promptly joined on page 263 by two men, a man and his son, who asked if they may also partake in swimming with Tom and his Father. The men start talking and it turns out that the other two men have just come from California. They tell a story not extremely unlike the other story which the man at the road-side camp described. Their story describes the conditions as very uncomfortable. Subsequently the Joads paid no head to this warning either. Hence, they traveled on, only to meet up with (on page 274) a very dispassionate police officer. This gave the Joads a first hand sip of the general mood that Californians had for these migrant workers. The policeman treated the migrants with little or no respect, seemed to just as soon see them drop off the face of the earth than see them come into California. The Corollary chapter Nineteen deals with the history of California. How it was settled by the feverish Americans. Through these descriptions we can start to understand the Californians view on why they dislike the migrant workers with such conviction. The chapter describes the initial owners of the land, the Mexicans, as being "weak and fed". This description would suggest that the Mexican's were well fed and content to live freely on the land with little desire to need more. Thus they were in little position to try and stop the onslaught of American's who wanted the land much more than the Mexicans did, and were too weak to stop them from doing so. This lead to the turning over of the land to the American's in the California region. This same land was kept by the same families and worked with much success. So much success that they needed to work only part of it to stay leisurably comfortable, financially. Therefore the burning desire for the land diminished. This is where the migrant workers come in. The Californians view of the workers are very much the same as the Mexican's must have thought of the Californians when there land was taken over. Consequently the Californians, being afraid that history might repeat itself and the workers may take over the land, the Californians tried to discourage the growth in population of migrant workers as much as possible. Any way that they could, legal or not. The killing of Jim Casy is an example of the cruel behavior of the Californians. They

Vincent by Don Mclean Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Vincent by Don Mclean - Essay Example He was residing in Massachusetts in an attractive federal designed residence. This house was referred to as the Sedgwick house. The Sedgwick household included an interesting individual whom Andy Warhol had worked with in the 60s, Edie Sedgwick. McLean composed the song in his dwelling that was filled with antiques. The motivation occurred to him one sunrise while he was on the veranda going through a work on Gogh. McLean discovered that a song about the artist could be composed out of Starry Night, the painting. The song makes use of the strings, guitar, vibraphone, and accordion (Whitburn 166). This paper will analyze the song, Vincent, by Don McLean, focusing on the lyrics, symbol, context, writing technique and how the music blends with the meaning of the song. The composerââ¬â¢s lyrics highlight his life situations. The lyrics of the song highlight how the writer comprehends what the difficulties of an artist are like. He asserts that the society does not know the reasons tha t make artists write or paint. McLean has experienced this situation himself. The writer of the song has come across the paintings of Vincent and has comprehended what Vincent was attempting to illustrate. The writer is attempting to communicate to the listeners that no individual would pay attention to what Vincent was attempting to say, and that individuals did not appreciate the correct meaning of the paintings because they perceived him as peculiar. The composerââ¬â¢s foremost point is that the society should become tolerant. The reiteration of the words, ââ¬Ëstarry starry nightââ¬â¢, highlights the significance of the heavens. Vincent enjoyed night time and he had the ability to paint the skies with numerous stars. In the last chorus, Mclean asserts, ââ¬Å"They would not listen, they are not listening still, perhaps they never will.â⬠This shows how Van Gogh was not appreciated as a painter until he died (Whitburn 166). There is the use of symbol in McLeanââ¬â ¢s song. The opening phrase, Starry Starry Night, is an indication of the painting, The Starry Night, by Van Gogh. The painting of Van Gogh and the song of Don McLean signifies what it feels like when an individual is not understood. The lines, ââ¬Å"Paint your palette blue and grayâ⬠highlight the outstanding colors of Van Goghââ¬â¢s painting, and they most likely are a testimonial to Van Goghââ¬â¢s behavior of biting or sucking on his paint brushes during painting. The phrases, ââ¬Å"ragged men in ragged clothesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"how you tried to set them freeâ⬠illustrates Van Goghââ¬â¢s liking for the socially banished and humanitarian events. This is also highlighted in Van Goghââ¬â¢s drawings and paintings. In addition, the lyrics, ââ¬Å"They would not listen, they did not know howâ⬠signifies the family and a number of people who were significant of Van Goghââ¬â¢s compassion to those presumed to be miserable (Whitburn 166). Finally, the line, ââ¬Å"How you suffered for your sanityâ⬠symbolizes the schizophrenic condition which Van Gogh experienced. There are a number of situations that help in composing the song. McLean composed the song in his dwelling filled with antiques. The motivation occurred to him one sunrise while he was on the veranda going through a work on Van Gogh. McLean discovered that a song about the artist could be composed out of Starry Night, the painting. In addition, Van Gogh worked on his painting when he was experiencing one of his most trying times of his existence (Whitburn 166). During this time, he was put in prison in an asylum at Saint Remy.
